Chess is played on an 8x8 board with 64 squares.
Each player starts with 16 pieces: a king, queen, two rooks, knights, bishops, and eight pawns.
The board is set up so that the bottom-right square is white.
The queen is always placed on her own color, white queen on white, black queen on black.
Pawns move forward one square but capture diagonally.
Knights move in an L-shape: two squares in one direction, then one square perpendicular.
Bishops move diagonally any number of squares.
Rooks move horizontally or vertically any number of squares.
The king moves one square in any direction.
The primary goal is to checkmate the opponent’s king.
